Around the River
"Around the River" examines the socio-economic and environmental crisis that is gripping the Sacco river Valley, a wide territory near Rome in the southern-central area of Italy.
An uncontrolled industrial development lasted decades and lack of environmental policies have generated an overload of pollutants that contaminate the Sacco river and the neighbouring lands, creating problems throughout the food chain. This situation affects an area already subject to a heavy air pollution caused by several incinerators and by chemical industries stemming from the beginning of the last century.
Along the 80 km of the river, hundreds of hectares of land are banned for cultivation, several pollutants were detected including beta-HCH, a by-product of Lindane, a carcinogenic insecticide produced by local industries in the past. This substance in 2005 has caused the killing of some 6,000 head of cattle and its presence was also confirmed in the blood of the inhabitants. The reclamation works are still up in the air, the river water is unusable, the few active farms struggle making huge sacrifices, people continue to get sick.
Since 2016 the Sacco river Valley has been added to the list of "Sites of National Interest", only the very extensive contaminated areas classified as dangerous by the Italian State can be part of it.
The purpose of these images is to describe the state of isolation and the sense of abandonment felt by the inhabitants, but also their spirit of sacrifice and the strong relationship established with their own land, for years disputed between industry and agriculture.

"Around the River" esamina la crisi socio-economico-ambientale che attanaglia la Valle del fiume Sacco, un vasto territorio tra le province di Roma e Frosinone.
L'incontrollato sviluppo industriale e la mancanza di politiche ambientali hanno generato nel corso degli anni un sovraccarico di inquinanti che, contaminando il fiume Sacco e le terre vicine, ha creato problemi in tutta la catena alimentare. Tale situazione interessa un’area sottoposta anche ad un forte inquinamento atmosferico causato da vari inceneritori e dalle industrie chimiche sorte fin dall'inizio del secolo scorso.
Lungo gli 80 km del fiume sono centinaia i terreni interdetti all'agricoltura, diversi gli inquinanti rilevati, tra questi il Beta-HCH (Beta-esaclorocicloesano), sottoprodotto del Lindano, insetticida considerato cancerogeno e prodotto in passato dalle industrie locali. Questa sostanza rilevata nel latte prodotto dagli allevamenti ha causato nel 2005 l’abbattimento di circa 6000 capi di bestiame e la sua presenza è stata riscontrata anche nel sangue degli abitanti.
Nella Valle, nel 2016, è stato riperimetrato uno dei Siti di Interesse Nazionale più grandi e complessi d'Italia, le opere di bonifica ancora sono in alto mare, l'acqua del fiume è inutilizzabile, i pochi allevamenti attivi vanno avanti facendo enormi sacrifici, la gente continua ad ammalarsi.
L'obiettivo di queste immagini è descrivere lo stato di isolamento ed il senso di abbandono provato dagli abitanti, ma anche il loro spirito di sacrificio ed il forte legame instaurato con la propria terra ormai da anni contesa tra l'industria e l'agricoltura.
